Description
"Fig-tree Blantyre". Landscape view of trees and shrubs at Blantyre, in the centre of the image is a large mature fig tree. There is a large hill in the distance. On the 23rd October 1876 the initial mission party camped at this site, and this date was accepted as the founding date of the Blantyre mission. The site was found by Henry Henderson, son of a minister from Kinclaven, Perthshire, and part of the pioneer missionary group sent out by the Free Church mission and the Church of Scotland mission in 1875.
