Description: Image of a lighthouse on a rocky promontory with ships sailing nearby and sun rising on the horizon in background at the top of a letter of safe conduct certificate for the brig Peggy of Newport, Rhode Island, granting the ship the ability to pass without "hindrance, seizure, or molestation;" embossed United States seal at bottom left; signed by President George Washington and Secretary of State Timothy Pickering.
"Joseph Finch, master or commander, of the burthen of One hundred and sixteen..."--text, printed and handwritten manuscript, center of image. "1797 Bring Peggy's Passport. No. 6. District of New York April 11 1800 Passport void the [vessel] having been sold in this District. [signature illegible]"--text, handwritten manuscript on verso.
