Used in the Exhibit: Play by Play - A Century of L.A. Sports Photography, 1889-1989 Considered one of the finest pitchers in the "Negro Leagues", Chet Brewer played alongside Satchel Paige with the Kansas City Monarchs. Before the 1943 season, the L.A. Angels invited Brewer and Lou Dials to try out for the team. The offer was rescinded, however, and Brewer never got a chance to play in the Majors. He settled in L.A., scouted for the Pittsburgh Pirates, and ran a youth league in South Central that produced such standouts as Reggie Smith, Willie Crawford, Dock Ellis, Bobby Tolan, Eddie Murray, and Ozzie Smith. After his death, this field was re-named "Chet Brewer Field" in honor of his many contributions to baseball. Photo dated: June 7, 1983.
