Description
Lower Van Norman Reservoir damage due to the San Fernando, California 1971 earthquake. Photograph shows concrete dam facing and service road have slid with a portion of dam into the reservoir and there is an extensive fracturing on remaining front of earth-fill dam. Seismic shaking caused failure of dam.
Lower Van Norman Dam and Reservoir were constructed in 1918 by the Los Angeles Department of Water and Power. During the 1971 San Fernando earthquake, the north side of the dam liquefied. The dam came exceedingly close to complete failure. The dam was only 4 feet above water level after the earthquake.
Scanned with Microtek Scanmaker 1000XL Pro; as a 600 dpi TIFF image in 8-bit Grayscale. Auto Level image processing applied and compressed into JPG format using Photoshop CS3.
