Description
Note: Ndjoya=Njoya. 11.2000 LG. - "Datum der Photographie ca. 1912, Datum des Drucks 1916." (Ch. M. Geary 1988: 121, 135).
Note translation: Ndjoya=Njoya. 11.2000 LG. - "Date of photography ca. 1912, date of print 1916." (C. M. Geary 1988: 121, 135). - "King Njoya. Head and shoulders, from the front. A long way from the coast, up on the high grasslands, you find the Bamum tribe. This is one of the largest and most intelligent tribes in Cameroon. It has a population of about 82,000, and you can cross its territory in three hard days marching. The head of this enterprising little people is the intelligent and famous chief Njoya. He became king when he was still a little boy. His father had fallen in a war against a neighbouring tribe. His ambitious and cruel mother managed to see that, among the many sons of the king, it was her small son Njoya who gained the lordship of the Bamum people. She used a lot of cunning to this end, and much blood was shed. He has been ruling circumspectly and with great faithfulness for a large number of years now. Since he became king many things have changed for the better in this remote country. (Especially since the German government stretched its sceptre of peace out over Cameroon a new age has started for the people of Bamum, an age of positive development). Njoya is a true friend of the Government and has been careful to see that the New has found an easy entrance in his country. (He has also supported the work of the missionaries in every way possible and worked to see that his subjects develop an interest in the new teachings.) He is an amiable man and possesses a fine instinctive tact, which can astound us Europeans, but which ensures that his Black Majesty remains in our memory as very pleasant. Njoya s appearance and behaviour is always truly royal . He is tall, and his walk alone is imposing. His magnificent long flowing robes clothe his body and on his proud head is wound a long white turban. His face has sharp contours, but his glance is spoiled by his eye condition. Some years ago he travelled to the Coast, to consult a doctor. He
