Description
1989-1240. In: [Scenes of Sacramento] [manuscript] / Eugene Walter Hepting. [Sacramento, Calif. : E. Hepting, 1938?], Vol. C, leaf 25. Two two-story buildings are on the left and on the right a one story with the first two letters visible "BA" and a striped column below; Of the two principal buildings the one on the right has a glass-fronted first floor advertising the "Hub Hotel"; above the first floor is a project sign "Beds . Rooms. 15 cents 20 cents"; on second floor are three tall windows separated by decorative elements and topped by a pediment; the left principal building has a first floor business "Second Hand Store"; above are three tall arched windows with painted outlines and quoins at the sides; above the pediment is curved with a round window in the center and at each end a thin arched window. Walter Hepting was born in Sacramento (father was from Switzerland, mother from Germany). Worked for the State Treasurer's Office. Was amateur historian, collected old photographs and images of Sacramento. "Now The Hub Rooms at 224 Jay street. Original building of the D.O. Mills Bank, erected in 1853. It was 2 stories in height, 20 x 80, Cost $9,500. First established along the water-front in 1849. In connection with this house, was the firm of James Mills & Co., est. Jan. 1, 1850 and transacted a general merchandise business."
