This is how the main section of the city of Sierra Madre looked early this morning, even before the sun came up. Flames lighted the store fronts almost as daylight. In the hills the terrifying blaze crept ever closer--about 100 yards an hour, and completely out of control. One thousand fire fighters had little chance to cut firebreaks before the strong winds fanned new patches into flame. Photo dated: December 28, 1953.
