Description
Shows Alisal Street. The section down near the mountains at the end of the street was the area known as "Little Oklahoma" because many of the people who came to thus area looking for work were from the areas of the United States that were suffering from the Dust Storms of the 1930s, i.e., Oklahoma. Bonnie Alvarado who was raised in this area tells that policemen were stationed at the tracks to keep the "Okies" from going into Salinas. Photographs gathered for a 2011 Salinas Public Library program about Alisal, an area to the east of Salinas, California. Panel included: Joanne Adcock Schmidt, Bill Ramsey, Bonnie Wright Alvarado, Nell Marie (DeNoon) Gardner, and Virginia Rocca Barton. Other speakers included: Mayor Dennis Donohue and Mona Gudgel. Facilitators: Brian Kimura and Don Gardner. Special appearance by: Larry Hosford. Digital Photo only.
