Description
A man prepares a statue of Jesus by covering it with colorful garments. He and others are decorating the statues for a procession. In 1980, the Catholic Church had to pull out of the Quiché Department, where Chajul is located, after three priests and dozens of lay catechists were killed. The church was used as a military base toward the end of 1980. Even the saints were dressed as soldiers. Catholic workers didn't return to the region until late 1984.
