Description
In the wake of the October 17, 1989 Loma Prieta Earthquake, Caltrans commissioned an oral history project to document the personal and professional experiences of Caltrans employees who worked to restore the State's damaged transportation system. This recording is the Loma Prieta Oral History of Robert Hernandez who was a Heavy Equipment Operator for Caltrans in District 5 at the San Luis Obispo Maintenance Yard. It is part of a series of 258 interviews that were done with Caltrans staff after the earthquake. At the time of the earthquake. Hernandez was at home and later in the evening his supervisor called and told him that he would be assisting District 4 starting tomorrow. Some of the projects that Hernandez assisted with were Highway 152 at Hecker Pass repairs, hauling K-rails to Highway 17 to close the highway to traffic, and clearing rockslides from Highway 152. Hernandez saw the damage to homes in Watsonville and the hardships people had sleeping in tents after the earthquake. California Audiovisual Preservation Project
