Description
In response to the spread of organized anti-Semitism in the United States during the 1930s, leaders of Los Angeles' Jewish community formed a special defense organization known as the Los Angeles Jewish Community Committee. The committee later changed its name to the Jewish Federation Council of Greater Los Angeles, Community Relations Committee. The collection documents the committee's efforts to combat prejudice and educate the public through cooperation with both Jewish and non-Jewish groups, from its formation in 1933 through the early 1990s. Late in 1937, Dr. John Lechner of the American Legion submitted a report regarding Nazi activities in Southern California. In that report, Dr. Lechner apparently mentioned some of the activities of a Mr. R. Kunhe, the author of this letter. Mr. Kunhe wrote this letter to the Commander of the Los Angeles County Council of the American Legion in order to vehemently dispute the points put forth in Dr. Lechner's report, and to request corrections to the report. This is the second page of a 2-page letter, typewritten, and on the official stationery of the Los Angeles office of the German American Bund. (Page 1 is in this collection: CRCms147a.) Mr. Kunhe does not indicate what his association is with the Bund, but rather signs the letter: "Yours very truly, R. Kunhe, Past commander of the German World War Vets." 11 x 8.5 in.
