Description
Etched in the red glass are the letters P. Ry. The following quotes are taken from the San Francisco Chronicle, Saturday March 24, 1984: "Santa Clara County Light Rail Project Starts with a Bang". "San Jose's first street cars ran in 1888, years before San Francisco had electric cars. Later, the Southern Pacific Railroad developed an extensive electric interurban network called The Peninsular Railway. It was so popular in the 1920s that special excursions were run to see the fruit trees in blossom. But the private car began taking over. The Peninsular Railway folded in 1935, and the last San Jose streetcar was replaced by buses in 1938. The huge postwar boom brought huge growth - all of it fueled by the private car. Freeways and expressways crisscrossed the valley, linking jobs and shopping centers. Eventually, even the bus system nearly faded away."
