Description
Original camera footage edited for broadcast for KNTV San Jose Channel 11 news. Includes national, local, and sports coverage. The accompanying script, read by the newscaster, provides details of the stories and completes the broadcast. Reel 1: Segment 1 (silent): Men on picket line at FMC Corporation. Includes shot of Volkswagen Bug driving into parking lot. Script reads, "An end to the 3-week old FMC strike may be in the offing. Both management and the machinist's union have agreed to a tentative meeting next Monday. Pickets continue to man the gates at FMC's Julian and Coleman Street plants. Their walkout is in its 23rd day. At issue is wages and fringe benefits. Pickets on the line seem willing to continue the strike. But several quipped that they had their yard work completed, so that they were free to return to their jobs. One previous meeting between the machinists and FMC proved fruitless. There are hopes that Monday's meeting may end the strike, but as an FMC spokesman said, 'It's hard to predict.'" Segment 2 (sound): Attorney General Thomas Lynch speaks to camera on dangers of LSD, the need for tougher laws, and education for youth. "This is THE most dangerous drug to come on the market..." Script reads, "Attorney General Thomas Lynch said today that the problem created by the use of the hallucinatory drug LSD by state college and university students must be coped with immediately. The state's top legal officer made the statement at a reception held in his honor this afternoon at the Triton Gallery here in San Jose. Channel 11 news asked Lynch how he proposed dealing with the LSD problem." Segment 3 (sound): State Board of Education President Tom Braden on camera talking about lieutenant governor Glenn Anderson, the meaning of "guts" and whether he's the "Kennedy man" in California. Script reads, "State Board of Education President Tom Braden, who hopes to move up to the Lieutenant Governorship, took to the campaign trail in San Jose today. He spoke at San Jose State before educators. Channel 11's Rik Whitaker asked Braden the meaning behind his billboards, which proclaim...'GUTS...Tom Braden...'" Segment 4 (silent): Baseball action of San Jose Bees season opener at night. Script reads, "The professional baseball season got under way tonight in San Jose, as the San Jose Bees opened their 1966 California League season before 2500 fans at Municipal Stadium...The season opened with the usual pre-game festivities...Master of Ceremonies Carl Ogdan introduced Bees Manager Rocky Bridges, who in turn introduced his ball club...but the big moment came when San Jose Mayor Joseph Pace climbed to the mount to throw out the first ball...the mayor had been warming up on the side line before the game, but he had a little trouble holding on to the ball when his turn came to throw...but the mayor did make the pitch, and former Red Sox star Jackie Jensen layed down a perfect bunt, and the season was under way...the Bees responded in championship style as they downed the Bakersfield Bears 4 to 1...the Bees scored twice in the 3rd, and twice in the 8th to wrap up the ball game..." Reel 2: Panel on LSD at San Jose State College. Script reads, "LSD, the controversial hallucinatory drug, took the spotlight during a three hour forum at San Jose State College today...the panel was assembled to answer student questions about the drug, and possibly to provide some answers for those who have taken doses of LSD and other similar drugs. One of the panelists was the Reverend William Houff, a Redwood City Unitarian minister who has taken LSD as part of a controlled experiment. He described the sensation...Researcher Myron Stolaroff, President of the Menlo Park-based International Foundation for Advanced Study, talked about the hazards of the drug..." Segment 1 (silent): Panel of people on stage in an auditorium. Segment 2 (sound): Reverend William Houff describing his LSD trip Segment 3 (sound): Researcher Myron Stolaroff talks about purpose of LSD research Reel 3: Segment 1 (sound): Musical theater performance. Script reads, "Across town from the FMC pickets another labor dispute is brewing -- but this one has a guaranteed happy ending. And if the AFL-CIO will pardon us, the strikers at this pajama factory have a lot more pizzazz. It's all part of the 'Pajama Game,' now in dress rehearsal, opening this Friday for a two weekend run at Andrew Hill High School in San Jose. Now we're not suggesting anything to the State mediation people, but think for a minute what would happen if the FMC people used the same tactics as employed by the ladies at the pajama factory. Case in point -- Labor -- played by Nancy Bonetti, and Management -- played by Dave Guess -- share a pajama. Now, there is a new image for labor. The show -- mediated by director Ray Gouveia, musical director Mike Kambietz, and choreographer Margarette Bergstrom -- opens this Friday at Andrew Hill High School." Segment 2 (silent): Men in office looking at architectural plans, mainly facades. Script reads, "This is Library Week...and in San Jose, the attention is on the soon to be started main library.. In the offices of architect Norton Curtis and Associates, plans for the new library are nearing the completed stage. They are due for presentation before the City Council next Monday evening. The new library will be a six floor structure, with two floors below street level. It will be the first building to go in the Kennedy Fine Arts Center. It will be built across from the Civic Auditorium, Ground will be broken for the four million dollar building in July. Construction is expected to be completed by the following July."
