Description
Charles Handy thought for the day on Ronald Reagan and how new leaders should focus on re-framing problems to facilitate new solutions. Handy begins the thought discussing whether Reagan will have sufficient stamina to make the necessary decisions of a leader in his position. He proceeds to comment on how, while he was teaching a senior management course, he noted how most of the student-managers, though they perceived themselves as decision-makers, found that their role really wasn't to make big decisions. Handy uses this example to Charles Handy thought for the day on Ronald Reagan and how new leaders should focus on re-framing problems to facilitate new solutions. Handy uses this experience to demonstrate that leaders often don't make big decisions in well-run organizations, and that managers mostly pick people to pick people who will make the significant decisions. He goes on to state that good leaders, and President Reagan, should have the ability to reframe problems and reconceptualize the familiar in order to generate new solutions, that Reagan and JFK are good re-framers, and that more people should be trained in this skill. Handy closes the thought stating that the challenge for any President is to do more creative re-framing for America and the world and, also, that the challenge for any leader across sectors is to become adept at re-framing.
