Description
Henry Nash Smith examined Mark Twain's conception of his role, the kind of writer he thought he was and the audience he wrote for. Smith asserted that Twain assumed that Americans provided two audiences, the cultivated minority and the masses. He quoted Twain as asserting that he never tried to help cultivate the cultivated masses; rather Twain's target audience was the masses. Smith praised Twain for his natural, unaffected style.
