Dvorak, a Warner Bros. contract player, sued her employers in order to cancel her contract early. She asserted that the studio unlawfully suspended her during a prolonged illness. Warner Bros., and the judge, disagreed. Photograph caption dated February 14, 1936 reads, "Ann Dvorak, dark-eyed film star, is shown in court here today for hearing on her suit to have terms of her screen contract construed. She charges her studio is guilty of breach of contract. The studio counters with the claim that she was tempermental and refused parts assigned her."
