Poster from Carnation Revolution depicting solidarity. Alentejo Province, southeast of Lisbon, includes today’s districts of Portalegre, Évora, Beja, Santarém, and Setúbal. Alentejo is the agricultural heartland of Portugal, producing 80% of the world’s cork. In contrast to the small peasant cultivators of the northern provinces, Alentejo was dominated by large landholdings worked by landless agricultural wage laborers and small marginal peasants. Thus, the epic struggle for land reform in the south was not merely one of surplus land redistribution, but of full-scale expropriation and collectivization.
