The California Women of the Golden West presented a pageant on May 20, 1932, in which they impersonated famous women of the state's history. At left is Mrs. Frederick Heister as Dolores Lugo. At right is Mrs. C. G. Spence as Encarnacione Avila, who presided over the famous Avila adobe on Olvera Street. Her costume is a reproduction of that worn by Dona Avila in the portrait which hangs on the adobe wall. The Lugos were among the first settlers, and their house stood opposite the Plaza Church. It was on the old Lugo Rancho that Loyola University had its first site.
