They belong to the Fuerzas Populares de Liberación Farabundo Martí (FPL), a left-wing military and political organization in El Salvador. Guerrillas occupied the town of La Palma for twenty-four hours before retreating into the hills in the middle of the following night to avoid confrontation with the army.
