Deanne Stillman discusses her book, “Twentynine Palms.” She begins by talking about the generational impact that poverty and violence has on individuals. Martinson asks Stillman to read a passage from the book about the Mojave Desert. Stillman explains that her book is about the murders of 2 young women in the military town of Twentynine Palms, California. Valentine Underwood, a prominent athlete on the Marine base near the town, raped and stabbed Rosalie Ortega and Mandi Scott. Stillman reads what Mandi Scott’s mother recited to the jury at Underwood’s trial. She ends the interview by talking about how she would like to visit Valentine Underwood in prison.
