Description
These recordings are of an interview with Gilbert W. Cline, the owner and operator of Cline Construction Company, and follows the history of the company along with stories of Upland businessmen from 1910 to 1930. The second part of the first interview with Cline mentions Oceanview Water Company reservoir, land values, and the flood of 1938 among other things. In the first interview, Cline described the “…original reservoir for the water for the city of Upland” as a “…thing [that] was 10x20. Might have been 8 feet deep.” Later, another reservoir, which Cline’s father helped build, was constructed further north. The interview goes on to discuss the Flood of 1938, and how the surrounding mountains and canyons were inundated with water, which forced mud and dirt to accumulate in downtown Upland. In the second interview, Cline began to discuss the Madonna of the Trail and the unveiling of the site. Cline also discussed how Foothill Boulevard had been paved with Federal money after the First World War, and the federal government paved a way from San Antonio Avenue to the mountain range to control irrigation waters.
