Toys for Tots is a program run by the United States Marine Corps Reserve which distributes toys at Christmas to needy children. The program was founded in 1947 by reservist Major Bill Hendricks. It began as a local charitable effort in Los Angeles. The initial effort was so successful that Toys for Tots launched a national campaign in 1948. Photograph caption dated December 5, 1964 reads "A fashion show to assist the drive of the Marine Corps for Toys for Tots will be held Tuesday at John Robert Powers School, 14252 Ventura Blvd., Sherman Oaks. The event is under the direction of Dorothy Richardson, an instructor at the school, who, above, discusses plans with Tech. Sgt. James Jones. Thirty models are donating their time for the show and guests are requested to bring a toy as an admission fee."
