“Mohammadan Girls’ School, Sialkot”. “Panjab, India”. Group portrait of young girls wearing traditional dress, some hold books while many others hold dolls. The Women’s Association for Foreign Missions were involved in a number of schools in the Punjab and often these were vernacular schools teaching a wide spectrum curriculum. The Sialkot women’s mission was established by Miss Isabella Plumb (1861-1944) and Miss Mary E. Scorgie (fl.1890) under the authority of the Aberdeen Auxiliary of the Church of Scotland Women’s Association for Foreign Missions. The Women’s Associations main remit was the education of women in India and involved setting up girls’ schools and teaching in zenanas. It also included medical work. Miss Plumb spent 41 years working with the women of India.
