Article by Charles Handy on how instrumentalism and reductionism have failed, and the sixth need of business. Handy begins the article stating how instrumentalism is the underlying premise of capitalism, and how it is compounded by reductionism. He proceeds to state how instrumentalism and reductionism cannot jointly work in the workplace of the future, and how knowledge and applied intelligence are the keys to added value, being the new property and bases of wealth in an organization. As a result of such changes and the introduction of the practices of twin citizenship and federalism in organizations, Handy declares that what will ultimately hold an organization together will be a shared conviction in its purpose and methods. He then suggests that traditional businesses should begin looking to charities or other non-profit sector entities in order to get a glimpse of how to manage large organizations.
