Sports Photography, 1889-1989 The Johnson family moved to Olinda, near Fullerton, at the turn of the 20th Century to work in the lucrative "black gold" oil fields. In 1904, at age 16, Walter Johnson made his first pitching appearances; that year, he dueled memorably with Norwalk's ace pitcher Walter Settle. By 1908, the "California Comet" had graduated to the Washington Senators and begun his Hall of Fame career.
