Photograph caption dated October 5, 1957 reads, "Chet Smith, president of Electro-Medical Engineering Co. of Burbank, is shown with 'pacemaker,' electronic instrument for reviving and maintaining beat of stopped hearts. Unit replaces need of surgeons opening chest cavity of patients and massaging heart into operation."
