Photograph was edited for publication purposes Photograph caption dated March 14, 1958 reads, "Heavy equipment moves out earth for six-lane Sherman Way underpass which will permit lengthening of Van Nuys Airport runway from 6,000 to 8,000 feet. Construction by Griffith Co. began last August. Completion is scheduled for December. Extending 800 feet from Gothic avenue to 150 feet east of Monogram avenue, tunnel is costing $3,661,000."
