Description
View of the St. James Hotel from St. James Park looking across North First Street. The St. James Hotel was originally built in 1870 by ice and coal dealer Tyler Beach. In 1888 Beach added the fourth floor and enlarged the building to 225 rooms. The hotel was demolished in 1932 to make way for the new post office. The palm trees were planted in the park by Tyler Beach after they were sent to him as a gift by a friend in Southern California.
