4 images. Fire Prevention Series by White, 10 January 1957. How smokers in bed kill themselves. Caption slip reads: "Photographer: Mack. Date: 1957-01-10. Reporter: White. Assignment: Fire Prevention Services -- pic. with 2nd article. Special Instructions: Artist to put in fire from cigaret, burning quilt. 5-6-25-26: How smokers-in-bed kill themselves. As he sleeps, smoke gases rise to ceiling, then build back down to him to paralyze him, then the fire cremates him while he's helpless, even to scream. (Examiner photo specially posed based on real incidents by experts of LA Fire Dept. Man in picture is Inspector James E. Samuel). (Note: We may want to give the specially posed details in one box or notation with these photos, instead of under each shot, Stress that all are based on real incidents too grewsome [sic] to publish from original photographs)."
