Description
Mayor Norris Poulson turned on Los Angeles’ 100,000th electric street light on the night of March 6, 1955 in ceremonies conducted on Main Street just north of Commercial Street, the spot where the city’s first electric street light was installed on December 30, 1882. The first outdoor light, placed in service 72 years ago on New Year’s Eve by the then Mayor J. R. Toberman, was one of seven arc lamps installed on 150-foot standards.
