Larger than life U.S. Marines chasing childlike Japanese soldiers up palm trees on the Solomon Islands. Other marines are disembarking from their boats with bayonets ready. There is a monkey on one of the palm trees that has the same caricature face as the Japanese soldier. Japanese soldiers were depicted as monkeys, snakes and rats. On recto: MCPB 105217 9-11-42 9M. Japanese were drawn up as monkeys hanging from trees or lumbering around like big gorillas. The image of a subhuman primate was key to undercutting the humanity of the enemy.
