Description
A large crowd of men, women, and children, gather inside San Salvador's cathedral in honor of the third anniversary of Archbishop Óscar Arnulfo Romero’s assassination. An elderly woman with a blue dress and a black veil on her head is among the people standing closer to the altar. There is a large and colorful wreath in front of her. Romero was a prelate who spoke up against social injustice, assassinations, and torture. He was shot on March 24, 1980 in front of the Church of the Divine Providence as he celebrated mass in a hospital chapel. Pope Francis canonized Romero in 2018. The United Nations Truth Commission for El Salvador concluded in 1983 that Roberto d'Aubuisson, a right wing politician, soldier, and leader of anti-leftist death squads in El Salvador, gave the order to assassinate Romero but he was never brought to justice.
