Description
Caption from March 9, 1973 Sacramento Bee reads "Visitors to the open house yesterday at Beale Air Force Base were treated to a rare public showing of the American spy plane the AR-71 Blackbird. While the cockpit containing a vast array of super-sophisticated reconnaissance systems was sealed, the exterior of the closest thing to a manned intercontinental missile was on display form all angles, including from the back as seen above. The Blackbird, whose twin jet engines fling it across the fringe of space at sustained speeds of 2,000 miles an hour, is all black and looks like some science fiction monster machine. Nearly 12,000 persons attended the open house."
