Used in the Exhibit: Play by Play - A Century of L.A. Sports Photography, 1889-1989 Laffit Pincay Jr., following a muddy ride. The Panamanian-born Pincay typified jockeys' ultimate sacrifice: for years, he starved himself to make weight. In December 17, 1999, in the sixth race at Hollywood Park, Pincay broke Willie Shoemaker's mark of 8,833 wins to become thoroughbred racing's all-time winningest jockey. In 2003, after breaking his neck in a spill, Pincay retired with 9,530 victories. Photo dated: February 19, 1986. He died in 2003.
