2017-0227. Bust-length portrait. "Charles7 M. Blake, b. Dec. 24, 1819; son of Charles 6, John 5, John 4, Jonathan 3, Edward 2, William 11 & Agnes Blake of Dorchester, Mas, 1630" -- handwritten on verso. "Photo - Nov. 7/76" -- handwritten on verso. Charles Morris Blake, born Dec. 24, 1819 in Brewer, Maine of British ancestry. Studied medicine and theology, working as teacher and pastor in Presbyterian Church. In 1849 set out for California via Mexico, traveled on ship San Blasena to Cape San Lucas, then overland to San Diego, took ship Panama to San Francisco. Worked in the mines. Settled in San Francisco, working as associate editor of newspaper Pacific News. In 1851, in Benicia, established boy's school, Collegiate Institute. In later years worked as missionary in Chile, Presbyterian pastor, chaplain in the army during and after Civil War. Returned to California, took medical degree and worked with son and daughter (both physicians) in practice in San Francisco. Died in 1893.
