Photograph of "Kalawao Cliff and Baldwin Home. Since Dutton departed, Kalawao has been abandoned. It is the 'deserted village' of hallowed memories. The bungalows are falling into ruins. The row of cottages along the shore has disappeared. Horses and cattle now graze where once Dutton and Damien fingered their beads and sang their vesper hymns to the Star of the Sea. Fr. Sweeney loved this shore and spent hours here, pacing whilst in retreat he read his breviary. This cliff shelters a valley as darksome and forbidding as its shading suggests. The sun scarcely penetrates its mists."
