Description
Mrs. Daryl Gates admires her husband's new badge while the Police Chief listens during his investiture. Gates took his oath of office from long-time friend Judge Robert I. Weil, a former police commissioner. During the ceremony at the Police Academy, Gov. Jerry Brown said the department has a "tradition of excellence and a reputation that is unquestioned" and that these qualities are "assured in the future under Gate's command." Mayor Tom Bradley, two former chiefs, a chief's widow and a host of city oficials attended the ceremony. Below Gates' badge are World War II naval campaign ribbons. Photo dated: March 29, 1978.
