Born 4.VIII (23.VII) 1876 in the village of Tarkhov near St. Petersburg. Died 7.II.1942 in Leningrad
1890-96 attended gymnasium in St. Petersburg
1895-98 attended the drawing school of the Society for the Encouragement of the Arts
1896 attended Law School at St. Petersburg University
1898 visited Munich, then Switzerland and Italy
1898-1900 attended Princess Mariia Tenisheva's art school in St. Petersburg, taking courses under Il'ia Repin
1899 onward close to the World of Art artists, contributing to the journal and exhibitions
contributed illustrations to editions of Russian fairy-tales
1900-04 attended the Higher Art Institute of the Academy of Art
1904 made designs for Nikolai Rimsky-Korsakov's "Snegurochka" produced in 1905 at the Prague National Theater
published an article on the popular art of Northern Russia in the "World of Art" magazine
1905 contributed to satirical journals such as "Zhupel"
1907-11 worked on designs for Sergei Diaghilev's production of "Boris Godunov" in Paris
traveled to England
began to teach at the Society for the Encouragement of the Arts school
began work on designs for Rimsky-Korsakov's "Sadko" at the People's House, St. Petersburg
1909 designed Sergei Zimin's production of "The Golden Cockerel" in Moscow
1915 decorated ceilings for the Kazan Station, Moscow
1917-19 lived in the Crimea
1920-25 lived in Egypt and then moved to Paris
1920-30s continued to work as a stage and book designer

В1890-96 учился в гимназии в Петербурге
в 1895-98 брал уроки в Рисовальной школе при ОПХ
в 1896 поступил в Петербургский университет на юридический факультет
в 1898 посещал студию Антона Ашбе в Мюнхене, затем путешествовал по Швейцарии и Италии
в 1898-1900 посещал Тенишевскую мастерскую в Петербурге и брал уроки у И. Е. Репина
в 1899 сблизился с членами общества «Мир искусства», сотрудничал в журнале «Мир искусства» и принимал участие в проводимых им выставках
опубликовал в этом журнале в 1904 статью «Народное искусство русского Севера»
создавал много иллюстраций для изданий русских народных сказок
в 1900-04 учился как вольнослушатель в Академии художеств
в 1905 создал оформление оперы Н. А. Римского-Корсакова «Снегyрочка», поставленной в Пражском Национальном театре
в 1905 сотрудничал всатирических журналах, таких как «Жупел» и др.
в 1907-11 работал для Старинного театра в Петербурге и над постановкой «Бориса Годунова» для антрепризы С. П. Дягилева в Париже
путешествовал по Англии
начал преподавать в Школе при ОПХ
