Photograph probably used in one of Sibree's many publications. James Sibree first went to Madagascar as an architect in 1863, supervising the construction of the Martyr Memorial churches. He left Madagascar in 1867 to return to England to train as a missionary, receiving ordination in 1870. He returned to Madagascar 1870-1877 and 1883-1916, also serving a year in India 1879-1880. Sibree wrote and translated many publications, as well as planning over a hundred missionary buildings. The Sibree's children, Alice (1876 -1928) Mary (1874-1926) Elsie (1881-1969) and James Wilbeforce Sibree (1871- 1927) all served the LMS as missionaries in Madagascar, Samoa and Hong Kong.
