Photograph of an illustration showing the raising of the Bear Flag over Sonoma, June 14, 1846. A large group of men, most of which are carrying rifles, is gathered around a thick wooden pole at center. The men are wearing leather mountain man-type clothing, and several have taken off their hats to celebrate. The California Republic flag, complete with grizzly bear, star, and stripe, is being raised on the pole. In the background is the home of General Vallejo, an army barracks, and a church.
