The Ambasthāla Stūpa and vatadāge is on a platform surrounded by concentric circles of stone (earlier wooden?) pillars that supported a roof. View here with altar. The stūpa is reputed to enshrine the hair relic between the eyebrows of the Buddha. The small area at right within the vatadāge, which is enclosed by a railing draped with colorful flags, commemorates the spot at which the king is reputed to have stood when addressed by the Arahat Mahinda. It is popularly known as "Candrakānti pāshāna."
