Connie and Hector begin the interview discussing the book’s setting during the recession, and the importance of money and career in the main characters’ lives. They proceed to talk about illegal immigration in the novel and the cultural and sartorial differences concerning work dress and everyday clothing among Mexican female laborers, and how intellectual and academic goals of illegal college students have to be set aside to support their families through work. They proceed to discuss other aspects of the narrative that tackle the intersection of race and cultural differences. Connie and Hector then talk about Hector’s original motivation for writing the novel, and consider the differences between writing fiction and non-fiction, before moving on to discuss the current state of illegal immigration in America. Connie closes the interview requesting an autograph for her copy of the book.
