Elroy "Crazylegs" Hirsch was born in Wausau, Wisconsin on June 17, 1923. He was a pro football player, playing for the Chicago Rockets (1946-1948) and the Los Angeles Rams (1949-1957). He later served as the Director of Athletics for the University of Wisconsin-Madison from 1969 to 1987. The nickname was for his unusual running style. He died on January 28, 2004. Photograph caption dated November 2, 1960 reads "Surely the dream of every young boy would be this bedroom of Win Hirsch in Van Nuys. Here, he is shown with his famous father, Elroy Hirsch. Zebra skin bed cover was a trophy of Elroy 'Crazy Legs' Hirsch, which he brought back with him from his safari to Africa."
