Photograph was edited for publication purposes Photograph article dated December 16, 1961 partially reads, "A 12-year-old San Fernando boy died Thursday night in surgery, three hours after he was struck by an automobile in Sylmar while he walked his bicycle in a street. Police said David C. Hale, 833 Newton St., was pronounced dead at 9:52 p.m. at Sun Valley Hospital, where he was rushed by ambulance following the 6:55 accident. Officers said the youth, a Valley Times TODAY carrier, was walking along Cobalt street toward Foothill boulevard, just west of Bromont avenue, when he was struck from the rear by a convertible driven by Edward George Edwards, 38, a design specialist, 14853 Ararat St., Sylmar." Photograph caption reads, "San Fernando youth dies after being hit by car in Sylmar - David Hale, 12, had to walk in street - there are no sidewalks in area."
