Photograph caption dated May 11, 1965 reads, "Nearly a billion gallons of water are taken daily from Lake Havasu on the Colorado River. It is pumped up from the lake through these pipes and lifted 1,617 feet so that it can flow by gravity into Lake Mathews. The city, Valley included, uses this much water daily and the amount will increase as the population increases."
