Two women are standing in an elegant room The woman on the right rests her hand on a chair. The woman on the left wears a long-sleeved lavender brocade dress with a floral pattern. The bodice has vertical soft pleats, and four tiers of plain lavender ruffles at the upper half, meeting in a v neckline. Three tiers of lavender also create the upper portion of the sleeves, which end with narrow white ruffles at the wrists. The center of the v neck shows a white lace piece with a very high gold collar and a white lace frill at the neck. The same gold satin creates the waist of the skirt and a large gold bow adorns the left side of the waist. Bands of lavender ruffles trim the hem of the skirt and additional panels of five tiers curve up from the back to frame the center of the skirt. She wears a head-dress of large lavender flowers with a white egret feather at the top. The woman on the right is wearing a dark green suit with black trimming. The jacket has a high collar with multiple rows of white frills at the neck. It fastens at the center front with large ornate flower-patterned black buttons in graduated sizes. The jacket is trimmed with three rows of vertical black ruffles, larger at the shoulders and forming a v pattern. The long sleeves are puffed at the shoulders with another black button below the puffed section. The peplum of the jacket is a band of black satin. The skirt fastens asymmetrically on the left hip, and is edged with a ruffle of black and another row of graduated buttons. Her hair is dressed with black bows and plumes and she is holding a lorgnette. Both women wear small pearl stud earrings. Behind them on the left is a potted palm in an oriental style blue and white pot on a black stand. On the right is an ornate round vase on a side board holding an arrangement of pink flowers.
