Description
Representing the East Los Angeles Merchants Assn., Republican Governor Goodwin J. Knight (1896-1970) and his wife Arville ride in a convertible Ford Crestline down Whittier Boulevard in an East Los Angeles parade. In this thriving business district are several businesses, such as Floyd Powell's Furniture and the Maple Shoppe, seen in the background. Knight was the 31st Governor of California from 1953 to 1959. Prior to his tenure as governor, he was a judge of the Superior Court in Los Angeles beginning in 1935 and then the Lieutenant Governor under Earl Warren in 1946 and in 1950. He became governor himself when Warren resigned to become Chief Justice of the United States in 1953.; See images 00045707, 00070212 & 00070214 for similar views.
