Description
In the wake of the October 17, 1989, Loma Prieta Earthquake, Caltrans commissioned an oral history project to document the personal and professional experiences of Caltrans employees who worked to restore the State's damaged transportation system. This recording is the Loma Prieta Oral History of Chuck Huff, who was an Associate Transportation Engineer with Caltrans District 4 office in San Francisco. Before the earthquake his work assignment was on a widening project of Interstate 280 in San Jose. When the earthquake happened, Huff was at home in Union City and describes his personal experience. After the earthquake, he was on a temporary assignment with Caltrans Maintenance Supervisors, to go out in the field to inspect damaged sites in Santa Clara and Santa Cruz Counties excluding State Route 17. In the interview, Huff recalls the damage he saw on Interstate 280, State Route 9, State Route 35, and Sturve Slough. This recording is worth saving because it is a firsthand account of what it was like to experience the Loma Prieta Earthquake in the Bay Area, and records some of the observations of damage in San Jose and Santa Clara Counties and the work that was done to repair the transportation system in California.
