Description
Survival school student Jack Madeley stands in the middle of a grass field and hunches over a rifle during an obstacle course. The 160-acre camp, better known as the Starlight Training Center in Liberal, Missouri, was owned by Harry Claflin, a former U.S. Marine in Vietnam. The students are U.S. civilians with different backgrounds and professions who paid money in exchange for survivalist training. At the time, Madeley was a 30-year-old civilian from Lafayette, Louisiana, who worked as a fire protection and safety engineer for an oil company. Claflin studied the tactics, troop proficiency, and military effectiveness of foreign countries like those in Central America where he trained Guatemalan, Nicaraguan, and Salvadoran special forces.
