The famous Marx Brothers: "Chico" (Leonard Marx, 1887-1961), "Harpo" (Adolph [after 1911: Arthur] Marx, 1888-1964), "Groucho" (Julius Henry Marx, 1890-1977), "Gummo" (Milton Marx, 1892-1977), and "Zeppo" (Herbert Manfred Marx, 1901-1979), were a family comedy act from the early 1900s to the 1950s, though it was the three eldest who became household names. The brothers enjoyed success in Vaudeville, Broadway and motion pictures, working for Paramount, MGM, RKO and United Artist. Later in their career they made appearances in nightclubs, casinos, and television shows as a group as well as separately. Eventually, they would go on to have solo careers. On January 16, 1977, the Marx Brothers were inducted into the Motion Picture Hall of Fame. They were also collectively named #20 on American Film Institute's list of the Top 25 American male screen legends. They are the only group to be so honored. Pictured are Groucho (left) and Chico Marx, as they arrive at Federal Court on a charge of violating the copyright law in a radio broadcast skit in which they appeared. Their attorney attacked constitutionality of the law under which they were charged. Photograph dated November 3, 1937.
